Where to Apply for a Visa
With exceptions for visa-exempt countries, foreign citizens coming to China should generally apply for a visa in advance at Chinese embassies or consulates abroad, offices in Hong Kong, Macau, or other diplomatic missions authorized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Chinese embassies and consulates have jurisdictional divisions, and applicants should generally apply to the embassy or consulate in the area where they reside. Except for citizens of certain countries who must apply to the Chinese embassy or consulate in that country, applicants can generally apply to the nearest Chinese embassy or consulate. After entering Mainland China with a regular visa, if an extension or change of the visa is needed, the applicant should apply to the local public security organ authorized by the Ministry of Public Security.

(Entries)
(Enter before)
(Duration of Each Stay after Entry)
Understanding Your Chinese Visa
1. Number of Entries (Entries):
- Indicates the number of times the visa holder can enter China within the visa's validity period. Once the entries are used up, the visa becomes invalid. If you need to visit China again, you must reapply for a visa. Attempting to enter China with no remaining entries will result in denial. Before traveling to China, check the entry count and confirm visa validity.
2. Visa Validity Period (Enter before):
- Refers to the period during which the visa itself is valid. With remaining entry counts, the visa holder can enter China at any time before the expiration date (valid until 24:00 on the last day). A visa exceeding its validity, regardless of remaining entries, automatically becomes void and cannot be extended. If you plan to visit China beyond the visa's validity, a new visa application is required. All visas become effective from the date of issue. Any changes in travel plans, either personal or third-party-induced, leading to the visa's unusability, are the applicant's responsibility. Attempting to enter China with an expired visa will result in denial, so check the validity before departure.
3. Duration of Each Stay after Entry:
- Indicates the maximum number of days the visa holder is allowed to stay in China upon each entry, calculated from the entry date. To extend the stay, the visa holder must apply for an extension at the local public security bureau before the expiration of the permitted duration. Overstaying the visa duration is a violation of immigration laws and may result in fines. Therefore, check the stay duration regularly during your time in China.
Additional Notes:
- Individuals working in China, holding Z visas, journalists (J-1 visas), permanent residents (D visas), and students (X visas) must apply for residence permits at the local public security bureau within 30 days of entry to avoid illegal stay.
